New to Surya?

Start Here
If you're new to yoga, returning after some time away, or simply new to the studio, this page will help you choose a class and know what to expect when you come.
Surya is a small studio with just six spaces in each class, so you'll never find yourself lost at the back of a busy room.
Which class should I choose?
There isn't a 'right' first class. Think about what you're looking for from your practice that day.
I want a rounded yoga practice
Begin with breath and awareness, move through a fuller asana practice, and finish with pranayama, quieter postures and rest. A good choice if you'd like to experience several aspects of the practice in one class.
I want to move and be challenged
A stronger, flowing practice linking breath and movement. Some previous yoga experience is helpful.
I want something quieter
Longer-held and supported postures with space for stillness, breath and rest. A gentle place to begin if you're apprehensive about your first class.
I want to feel stronger and move more easily
A steady, accessible yoga practice with time to explore movement, mobility and gentle strengthening. A good choice if you're returning to yoga, feel a little stiffer than you used to, or prefer a more considered pace.

Still unsure?
Get in touch and tell me a little about what you're looking for. I'm happy to suggest where to begin.
Your First Class
What should I bring?
There are some mats at the studio, and all the props you'll need will be available. You're welcome to bring your own mat if you prefer. Bring some water and wear clothes you can move comfortably in.
When should I arrive?
Aim to arrive 5 to 10 minutes before your first class. It gives you time to settle in and lets me know anything that might be useful before we begin.
What if I have an injury or something I need you to know about?
Let me know before class about any injuries, pain, pregnancy or anything else that may affect your practice. I can offer options where appropriate, and I'll always encourage you to work within what feels right for your body.
What happens in class?
That depends on the practice you've chosen. I guide the class throughout, and you're always free to pause, rest or adapt something. Yoga isn't about performing a posture perfectly.
If cost is a barrier
I want yoga at Surya to be accessible to people who would like to practise but are finding things financially difficult.
If the cost of classes is preventing you from coming, please get in touch with me directly. We can have a private conversation about what might be possible.
You don't need to share more than you're comfortable with.
